In the 21st century, ENT specialists are devoted to two main goals: Preventing disease of the ears, nose, and throat, and Identifying disease at an early stage, so it can be managed and resolved without surgical intervention
Unfortunately, this is not always possible. Sometimes, chronic conditions can not be resolved even when they are recognised early and treated according to the latest protocols recommended by leading ENT experts in North America and Europe. In these situations, appropriate surgical procedures can relieve symptoms, arrest or reverse disease, and restore health.
We provide in-patient and out-patient surgical services at the Cayman Islands Hospital (HSA) and CTMH Doctors Hospital in George Town.
The unique domain of otolaryngologists is the treatment of ear disorders. They are trained in both the medical and surgical treatment of hearing loss, ear infections, balance disorders, ear noise (tinnitus), and some cranial nerve disorders.
What is nasal and sinus surgery?
When conservative treatments (saline nasal rinses and topical steroid sprays) are not effective, nose and sinus surgery is sometimes necessary to treat chronic conditions such as nasal obstruction, chronic rhinosinusitis, nasal polyps, and related problems.
This area of the body includes the important functions of sight, smell, hearing, and the appearance of the face.
In the head and neck area, otolaryngologists are trained to treat infections, benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous) tumors, facial trauma, and deformities of the face.
What is nasal septoplasty?
Nasal septoplasty is a surgical treatment for a deviated nasal septum. It corrects damage (for example, from a sports injury) or deformities of the cartilage in between the nostrils. A minor deviation in the septum is common and doesn’t cause significant health issues. But if the nasal septum deviation is more severe, it can cause nasal obstruction and affect breathing. A deviated septum can also lead to nighttime snoring and development of sleep apnea.
What is a turbinoplasty?
Patients with chronic or severe allergies, a chronic stuffy nose, snoring, nasal breathing difficulties, or obstructive sleep apnea often have enlarged nasal turbinates. There are three pairs of nasal turbinates in the nasal passageway, where they filter, warm, and humidify incoming air before it enters the upper respiratory tract. Carefully reducing the size of the nasal turbinates helps to open a blocked nasal passageway without compromising their important function.
What is endonasal sinus surgery?
Sinus surgery is a procedure that opens the sinuses to improve air flow, which can relieve chronic sinus inflammation and reduce nasal polyps. Sinus surgery is often the last resort when conservative treatments are not effective or when conditions are very severe.
