Allergy immunotherapy (AIT) is an allergy treatment that treats the underlying cause of an allergy, rather than dealing only with the allergy symptoms such as oral antihistamines (e.g. Zyrtec®, Benadryl®etc.), corticosteroides and topical steroids (e.g. Nasonex® Spray). Modern allergy immunotherapy treatments have been proven in studies to likely provide both quick- within a few months- and long lasting improvement of all symptoms. AIT helps the immune system to build a resistance to an allergy by changing the types and proportions of antibodies (immunoglobulins) and proteins (interleukins) it produces when it is exposed to the allergen.

After diagnosis of the type of airborne allergy, patients receive a targeted treatment for the responsible allergen (e.g. grass pollen, house dust mites etc.). AIT is available in a sublingual form (tablets or drops) or in a subcutaneous form (injections). Sublingual treatment is most appreciated by patients with time constraints and frequent travelers as it doesn’t require the see the allergologist on a monthly interval for injections.
